Singapore’s Nanyang Technological University (NTU) is set to launch a center for blockchain research as part of blockchain major Algorand Foundation‘s US$50 million initiative to develop and advance blockchain tech globally.

Called the Algorand Center of Excellence at NTU (ACE-NTU), the center is one of 10 such ACEs established this month. NTU is the only lead organization in Asia to be selected, joining the ranks of UC Berkeley, Carnegie Mellon University, Yale University, and Purdue University.

ACE aims to create a global ecosystem for blockchain and cryptocurrency research. It also looks to form education centers worldwide to advance the nascent tech through collaboration.

In particular, ACE-NTU also plans to work with industry partners to develop real-world blockchain applications for Singapore and ASEAN as a whole.

NTU said in a statement that there would be five initial blockchain research projects, one of which involves SGVerse, a metaverse platform for smart grid technologies. Other projects would also work toward integrating blockchain for enterprise use and developing financial data management solutions.

In line with this, the university will also introduce two new programs: Master of Science in Blockchain for postgraduates and a Minor in Blockchain for undergraduates. NTU will be molding these modules into smaller courses that can be combined to achieve microcredentials as well.
